An invisible emotion: paradoxes and challenges in social research on hate violence in health care contexts

Abstract
The emotion of hate, and its impacts, possesses a singularity and characteristics insufficiently analyzed from an anthropological perspective and the social theory of emotions. Epistemological and methodological topics present in any research process related to such a complex emotion as hate, its vital effects on the people who suffer its violence, and how it is attended and managed by the health system are explored. This is an exploratory qualitative study with a phenomenological approach, based on the analysis of the discourse of health professionals and victims of hate violence. We present qualitative results of the European project SHELTER (2018-2021) whose aim has been to improve the care and support of victims of hate crimes in the socio-healthcare field. We focus on some paradoxes such as the low visibility of hate violence and its effects, and how it conditions and affects planned actions and interventions aimed at identifying, managing and reducing its impact on victims. The analysis raises some points of attention and challenges to be considered for future research and social and socio-health intervention projects in the field of hate violence, an emerging public health problem in European societies.
