Abstract

Phubbing, the behaviour of ignoring face-to-face interactions in favour of smartphone use, has become normalised among young people and is linked to excessive smartphone and social media use. It has been shown that the latter try to capture attention through persuasive tools such as notifications or behavioural techniques offering variable rewards, which reinforce compulsive habits. This study analyses the relationship between phubbing and sociodemographic variables, academic performance, psychological distress and impulsivity in a sample of 783 students at the University of Barcelona. Using the Phubbing Scale, the Brief Symptom Inventory and the Barratt Impulsivity Scale, the results reveal that phubbing is not significantly related to sociodemographic factors or academic performance. A strong association of phubbing with high levels of impulsivity, anxiety [OR=1.041, p=0.004] and lack of attention [OR=1.081, p=0.002] was observed, the latter two variables being predictors of phubbing. These findings reinforce the idea that the use of social networks on smartphones contributes to the compulsion to constantly check the device, affecting emotional well-being and interpersonal relationships. It is necessary to design educational and prevention strategies to mitigate its negative effects on university students.
